Three Reasons that a Watchmen TV Series can work for HBO

From many news headlines there have been talks or speculations that a Watchmen series could be developed by HBO with the help of director Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman and Watchmen the movie) trying make a push for it. However, from a Collider news article the most prestigious and most qualified directors like even a David Fincher tried to push for his Utopia series to be made by HBO, but HBO shutdown the project because the budget for the show was just too high. Now if Zack Snyder  offers a great scripts, a good team of writers/directors and a reasonable budget for this TV series than a Watchmen series might be optional. However, HBO’s Game of Thrones coast about $6 million for each episode to make so it mainly depends if a high budget show, is able to bring in many amount of viewers each episode pre-week. Watchmen as a film cost about $130 million and worldwide and it only made $185. 3 million worldwide in the box office. As a rated R film it did decent in the box office but as a non PG-13 superhero film it is often consider as a box office failure and cult classic for a niche demographic. However, I think Watchmen series might have a better shot as a cable series than a movie and especially than a network television show. Because it doesn’t have to  worry about trying to bring in a wide audience viewership. Right now all of this is speculation but like any patient graphic novel fanboy I’m waiting for the possible best out of this discussion.

Here is 3 reasons that a Watchmen series could Work!

3. The Aftermath

If Zack Snyder really wants to get really ballsy of doing a new take on the Watchmen I think doing series where the original graphic novel left off would be unique idea. WARNING if you haven’t read the original or the Watchmen film adaptation, than don’t read this only if you don’t care for spoilers! In the very end of Watchmen a young geeky ginger news journalist is about to grab Rorschach’s journal, which contain many untold secrets about each Watchmen and conspiracy theories of the American government. It would be cool to see some sort of aftermath to see what are the Watchmen doing today in the 21st century? Like what happen to Dr. Manhattan after killing Rorschach for trying to prevent him to tell everybody what was cause the destruction the Nuclear destruction brought upon the entire the world. What does Ozymandias think about his consequences after doing such a criminal act upon killing billions and millions of innocent lives? Is both Nite Owl and Silk Specter really done doing crime fighting in general and also the big questions is there any Rorschach copycats fighting crime in dirty streets of New York? Is there is a new generation of Watchmen of the 21st Century! Oh boy so many possibilities and questions so left untold. Personally I would love to see a series knowing what if the rest of the world be like if words of Rorschach’s journal was spread allover the media.

2. A Prequel

The Before Watchmen comic series might not hold a candle stick compared to the original Watchmen graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Gibbons, but I believe that a Before Watchmen series can work best for a limited series or ongoing series if possible. I think it would be really interesting to explore the Golden Age of superheroes with the Minutemen or explore darker backgrounds of Rorschach and the Comedian or pre-Watchmen characters. This approach for storytelling could be a great way to explore newer stories that we might never see on the big screen. If a Minutemen series is great than we might get to chance to see a good historical superhero drama on our TV sets. However, if we get origin stories of the Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach (my  three favorite Watchmen characters) this could offer a new wave to fully explore the dark sides of superhero genre. If the approach is successful of course.

1 . A Series for each Individual Watchmen

If your not that much into prequels than I think keeping the TV series in the same timeline as the original graphic novel, but having each episode to spotlight each out of the 5 Watchmen characters. If HBO went with the direction for each individual Watchmen character during same timeline as Alan Moore’s graphic novel, as a viewer this kind of approach allows us to be engaged and to be even more in tune to the story and each Watchmen compared to watching it as a 2 hour minute film. Trust me I’m not knocking down the movie but I would like to see a series that would offer more story length, that we couldn’t experience to see in the Watchmen movie due to some scenes from the book had to be cut down to fit the time for the film. A Watchmen series starring each episode with five Watchmen can be wrapped up in 13 or 10 episodes minimum which be perfect for a ongoing TV series or even for a limited series.

Conclusion

Its nice to start in the beginning of the Fall season to hear such good upcoming comic book news. So what do you think about this awesome news do you think a Watchmen series can indeed work? Graphic Novel Entertainment Roundup News : Can Christopher Nolan Save Akira? My Thoughts on the new Dark Returns Variant III Master Race Cover and the possible Preacher AMC TV series Release Date

For over a decade a lot of acclaimed and creditable directors, actors, screenwriters and producers have tried to bring a Akira live action adaptation forever. The last bit of news of a Akira movie could be actually happening was when Daredevil screenwriter Marco J. Ramirez (also screenwriter for Sons of Anarchy) was latched onto to re-write the script. Now from a latest news article from Den of Geek it is rumored that Christoper Nolan could be apart of the Akira Warner Bros. movie project. Warner Bros. has plans of making a Akira trilogy as Christopher Nolan being the center of it. Many are speculating that could Christopher Nolan mystery project scheduled for 2017 could be him directing a planned Akira film? I highly doubt it but I won’t be too shocked if I might see, that the Akira filmed was announced and Nolan was directing it, and the production for the film beings sometime this month. But of all things Nolan could be nothing more than a producer like his minimal involvement with Man of Steel or Transcendence .

My Thoughts on Nolan being involved with Akira

If Christopher Nolan either the director, screenwriter and or producer for the possible Akira live action adaptation than this Akira movie might have chance getting out of development Hell hopefully. Its no doubt with all of the acclaimed films Nolan have done in career such as many films like The Prestige, Insomnia Memento, Inception, the Dark Knight Trilogy and even arguably his weakest films like Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar have been highly recognized, Nolan might be the type of director that have the swagger that can get this movie off the ground. In my opinion Christopher Nolan is amazing storyteller, visionary director and arguable one of the best directors in Hollywood right now. After watching his more visual looking films like Interstellar and Inception I know without a doubt that a possible Nolan directed Akira film would look absolutely stunning on a wide IMAX or a converted 3D movie screen. However, if Nolan is only being the producer it doesn’t mean a live action Akira film will turn out to be just miraculously amazing just because of Nolan’s involvement in the project. If we go back to Nolan’s producing Man of Steel a film that I indeed loved, the movie was a very deceive film  to audience and was a mixed bag when it came to the critics. Nolan was also the executive producer for Transcendence that was directed by Nolan’s acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister. And that filmed was hammered by critics and did properly in the box office only by making 103 million worldwide with a budget of 100 million. So if Nolan is only being the producer of Akira instead of writing or directing the film than it doesn’t mean this film will be good because Nolan’s name is attached onto the project. But his name dose give the audience credibility that this Akira film could be one of the successful Manga/Anime live action films made in North America. However, to make this clear this news is only a rumor, but if is later on announced that Nolan is indeed involved with the Akira Warner Bros film adaptation I hope Nolan is indeed writing or directing it.

Dark Knight Returns III Master Race Variant Thoughts

Wow this Variant drew by Dave Johnson opens a lot of questions and answers for me! Dark Knight Returns III Master Race is continuation of Frank Miller’s 1980s classic Dark Knight Returns and the not so classic Dark Knight Strikes Again (Dark Knight Returns 2). Dark Knight Returns Master Race is also being written by Frank Miller and Brain Azzarello  and drew by Andy Kubert and Klaus Johnson. What we see from the first image of Dark Knight Returns Master Race is Batman standing and looking up at the sky in the middle of the rain. But the most eye catching presence in this variant cover is Batman standing by a dead Joker with a bat rang stuck in the middle of his bleeding left eye. What I would love about this cover this looks like a clear continuation from the first Dark Knight Returns story where Batman battled the Joker, which resulted a bat rang being shot in his left eye and also killing himself after Batman snapped his neck while fighting inside the tunnel of love. After discussing about their final encounter together, Joker snaps his neck in place which resulted in killing himself and ending Joker’s psychopathic presents in Gotham City.  As I look at this variant cover from top to bottom I believe that this variant cover could hint that the Joker could somehow comeback from the dead, or Joker’s death could be hunting Batman mentally or even physically perhaps. Maybe there could be a brand new enemy “The Master Race” that  is using Joker’s body to mess with Batman. However, this variant could be simply just be week or nudge for the original Dark Knight Returns fans. Well we don’t know if Joker might or might not have a bigger role in the story until the first issue is release in November 25. So keep a good eye out.

The Preacher’s confirmed Release Date

The image that you see above is the confirmed poster for the upcoming Preacher series that is rumored to come out mid-2016 in May. If you are not familiar with this image. This is Jesse Custer’s former church in Texas, where he used to preach and also getting his powers of having the “voice” of God. A mysterious powerful voice that he can use to make people do whatever he says. The image is very simplistic so it isn’t very much to say about it, but I can’t wait for the series to appear on AMC sometime middle of next year.

Conclusion

I haven’t been writing for about 2 weeks from last post but since I’m back it awesome to see more entertainment news for lesser known exception of Dark Knight Returns III, being adapted for the mainstream media. I also personally I very intrigued for the Christopher Nolan possibly being attached to Akira live action film and the upcoming AMC Preacher series. The Potential Good & the Bad of the Ghost in the Shell film.

The upcoming Ghost in the Shell live action movie adaptation based on the Anime and Manga created by Masamune Shirow will be released in US theaters March 31 2017. I’m excited for the movie but like any other movie I’m excited for I do have my doubts. I will like to address 3 reasons I think this film could be potentially be good and 3 reasons this film can be absolutely abysmal!

3 Good Reasons

1. This could be one of the best visual film of 2017

Hopefully until Blade Runner 2049 I believe Ghost in the Shell will be the best visual stunning sic fi film in 2017. I truly enjoyed watching the atmosphere of the city as I was watching the trailer. One of the best scenes was  watching the “naked” cybernetic suit especially when  Motoko Kusanagi played by actress Scarlet Johansson, featured a slo mo fight scene using her invisible mesh suit into effect.

2. A begin of an Live Action  Anime/Manga Craze?

Regardless how you categorized Edge of Tomorrow’s source material either is from a Light Novel or from a Manga titled “All You Need Is Kill”  it is proven that Edge of Tomorrow have to be the most successful “American” made movie that was adapted from Japanese source material. Edge of Tomorrow was successful when it comes to critics and to audience because the movie took a non original idea into something exciting, engaging and added interesting characters especially when it comes to Emily Blunt’s portrayal as Rita Vrataski. If Ghost in the Shell tracks well with critics, positive word of mouth similar to Edge of Tomorrow, than we have potentially great Manga adaptions heading our way to the big screen.

1. This Could be Scarlet Jo’s Break Out Hit

Yeah, yeah before you lecture me I’m aware that Scarlet  Johansson’s biggest role is when she is featured in The Avenger films or the MCU standalone Captain America movies (Winter Soldier and Civil War) as Black Widow. Scarlet Jo was announced as being one of the top paid actress of Hollywood in 2016 but as of yet still haven’t landed a Black Widow standalone movie in the MCU slate. Well maybe if Ghost in the Shell gather’s good reception especially if everyone loves Scarlet Jo as the lead maybe this movie will prove Scarlet Jo can carry multi million action blockbuster on her own shoulders.

The Bad

3. Style over Substance

Yes I’m looking at you Aeon Sux…sorry I meant Flux. Like many other terribly directed sci fi action female lead movies such as UltraViolet and Elektra (2005 film) they are style over substance. There are 3 concerns I hope Ghost in the Shell won’t do like:

A. Having Visual Effects being only thing good about the movie instead of the story.

B Scarlet Jo only trying too look sexy in her tight cybernetic suit (I won’t lie won’t be complaining) but being wooden as a dead tree.

C.  Making us suffer to watch a terrible convoluted story line that leaves us confused or bored after leaving the theater.

2. Cliches

I’m not looking for this to be the next dystopia original sci fi film like a Clock Work Orange but I hope Ghost in the Shell leaves me out the theater feeling I watched something refreshing. Well the exception of already knowing this is based off a pre-existing source material. I hope Ghost in the Shell will not fall in same movie tropes such as offering us the same old tired slo mo action scenes that looks like a poor man’s Matrix or 300. Also, adding throwaway mustache twirling villain and added character subplots that felt pointless to tell. But the most important thing I hope Ghost in the Shell won’t fall into biggest cliched trap with action movies recently, which is allowing the trailers show all the best action scenes and moments in the trailers.

1. Bad Casting?

I feel the Ghost in Shell whitewashing controversy can be discuss in another topic, but if Ghost in the Shell fails with critics and box office than Scale Jo’s performance can be up for the debate as being example as another bad casting decision.  I hope Ghost in the Shell’s studio and casting director won’t fall in the same tired trope by casting a actor or actress in a action movie just to gain a wider attraction. I understand movies are made as a business and not to please fans, but I hope Scarlet Jo was cast because the studio saw something in her that  was worthy enough to play this role, not just because she is a BIG name to the public consciousness.

Conclusion

I’m a big fan of Ghost in the Shell source material and its premise which leaves me worried that Live action American adaptation will turn out to be another sci dud. What’s After Watchmen?

I’ve read various blogs and websites related to this surprising topic which gotten my full attention as being big fan of Watchmen. There are rumors that Geoff Johns wants to revive the 1980s classic Watchmen Graphic Novel that was written by Alan Moore and David Gibbons story could continue as a possible sequel. All this speculation begun when DC/Warner Bros. Producer and writer Geoff Johns  was releasing major news on his Twitter account covering the future slate of DC and DCEU News that consists of CW DC TV Universe, Injustice, the upcoming Wonder Woman Standalone film and lastly Watchmen.

Watchmen appearing in modern DC comics isn’t really surprise, DC revived the graphic novel from the 1980s to the 2010s when DC released the Before Watchmen prequel series and the end of DC’s Rebirth Story line.

(Warning the Picture below may contain Spoilers) 

I haven’t read the DC’s Rebirth story line as of yet, so I have little opinion with the comic series. But from my perspective it’s most likely and logically Johns will continue the Watchmen story in the Rebirth timeline. However, if DC wants to do a bold effort to make a straight up standalone Watchmen sequel here are my 3 reasons you could possible do it.

1. A New Generation

You know the old saying “Out with the Old in with New” I think it would be interesting to see are retired Crimebusters from the 1970s-1980s to pass the torch to a new generation of Crimebusters in the 2010s or 2020s similar how the Minutemen pass their capes and cowls to the Crimebusters. Maybe a retired Nite Owl and Silk Specter can inspire or train their child to become a young future superhero. I think it would be interesting to see a new generation of Crimebusters  seat in our highly depended high tech world facing a new age of “divided” American politics. It would be also interesting to see how the modern world could react to Dr. Manhattan. Will are new generation of heroes trust or distrust a man that is basically a living breathing nuclear weapon?

 

2. The Discovery of Rorschach’s Journal

Rorschach’s Journal is the most important element that carries the dramatic narrative of Watchmen and also stores Rorschach’s deep unkempt darkest secrets of many broken characters. Stated from a police report after Rorschach is arrested the report identifies the Journal as, “one notebook, pages filled with what is either an elaborate cipher or handwriting too cramped and eccentric to be legible.” All of the historical writings and secrets he has each individual Watchmen characters such as the Comedian, Silk Spectre (The second), Nite Owl, Dr. Manhattan and Dr. Ozymandias are kept inside of Rorschach’s Journal but due to the bad handwriting it’s hard to deceiver Rorschach’s words. However, in the end of Watchmen it is revealed that a young news journalist discovers Rorschach’s journal in a pile of paper. In a possible Watchmen sequel can Rorschach’s written words if interpreted can be revealed through mass media? It would be interesting to see if Rorschach’s journal if got into the wrong or right hands, could lead to reporting the truth of Ozymandias who was responsible of killing one billion people, and also which lead to Rorschach’s death in the end of the story.

1. More the Merrier

Dr. Manhattan is basically a God among insects, he is a living nuclear bomb. But what makes Manhattan so unique is can he think like an average human being like you and me. So, let’s say what if the government wants to create more “Dr. Manhattan Men?” Clones that cannot think like us but more so like a robot which only the government can control and use by their own terms when necessary. We now live in age where a possible nuclear war could be closer than ever and I think it would be interesting to see in a Watchmen sequel that the government will try to recreate a second or worst an army of Dr. Manhattan’s that doesn’t require humanistic qualities.

Conclusion

Whenever Geoff Johns deliver us more news for Watchmen time will tell, hopefully sooner than later. Personally I would rather Watchmen would still stay a self contained graphic novel. But I won’t lie I’m a little curious to see another continuation of the Watchmen Story.  But I would possibly be more excited if it was  an announced if Alan Moore and Geoff Johns collaborated to make a future Watchmen story together if though it’s highly unlikely that will ever happen anytime soon. As a big fan of Watchmen I have offer my thoughts on this topic but I’m more curious to know what do you think of this news? The Main Cast

 

What I truly love about this show is the dynamic personalities and the violent energy out of each character!  Jesse Custer played by Dominic Cooper portrays a rugged “Preacher” who tries his best to put his shady past buried beneath the ground of his old former pastor and also  father’s church. Although Custer has violent and nonchalantly persona he often tries his hardest to be a good Preacher among his wholesome but often annoying church followers. Living in a small deserted town in Texas Jesse Custer often tries to be the “hero” as he often  tries to give out advice to non-confident and misguided individuals that listens to him during his church services.  In the beginning of the show a young boy who once heard violent rumors of Custer’s misfortune past, demands Jesse Custer himself to settle odds with  his abusive father who is also beating his mother, Custer often tries to hold back his sinful temptations to get involved in the tangle. But just like Adam & Eve lowering to a tempting sinful Apple, Jesse Custer lashes out on the boy’s father inside a bar at night beating the abusive father and his colleagues nearly to death.  Dominic Cooper as in character successful brings out the softer, charming side of Jesse Custer’s actions but isn’t afraid to show the darker side of him. Now Frank Cassidy played by actor Joe Gilgun  is a mysterious vampire Irish violent brute who isn’t afraid to get his teeth “bloody.” Every time when Cassidy appears in each scene it elevates the show’s uncharted energy and grotesquery. Cassidy shows no emotions when it comes to killing anyone that dares stands against his way. In the first scene of him disguised as a bartender and also severing drinks inside a plane, Cassidy later  rips apart 5 or more men  that he discovers to be vampire hunters. Cassidy crazily uses any object in the plane such as glass beer bottles, a golf club (which he really enjoyed using) and a spray can as a flaming blow torch to despair anyone a front of his path. Near the end of the fight scene Cassidy isn’t afraid to show his chewy side as he tears apart a man’s neck off who attempt to pour “holy water” allover his head. After watching that scene I could already taste the tears of that wannabe vampire Edward Cullen. And last but not least Tulip played by actresses Ruth Negga plays the eccentric female lead in the show. Tulip isn’t fragile flower who isn’t afraid to show all of her tough guns to all of the bad boys that are packing  all of the heat. In a fight scene that involves Tulip fighting two thugs inside a car driving recklessly in a middle of a  corn field. Tulip viciously fights through her way by bashing their skulls to a pulp and biting  one of their ears off with her own teeth (no she isn’t a vampire either!). If you haven’t watched the show has of yet I won’t spoil all of the good parts of her, but  there is one particular scene that involves two southern kids and them helping her out of making Tulip a “bazooka” that is made out of soup cans. I know it sounds sort of goofy but that type of moment of depth ads to Tulip’s unpredictable behavior to the viewer’s imagination. In the middle of the show we begin to dig deep in Tulip’s personally side which also ties to Jesse Custer’s past. When both Tulip and Custer began to have a heart-to- heart it that Tulip and Custer may had a relationship which caused them to later drifted apart. Could Tulpid be the answer of Jesse Custer’s calling to wanting to be a Preacher that he is today? If so it perfectly lays out future episodes between further developing Tulip and Custer’s characters.

Grotesque

 

Look I understand The Preacher as a show on AMC can’t go extremely far of being super graphic like what is normally shown in Garth Ennis’s graphic novel. But what AMC is limited to regarded to mature  violence, vulgar language and sexual content, I thought The Preacher did a decent enough job of showing the grotesqueness of tribute to the source material. Like for example there is one particular scene involve a man cutting his own heart out from inside of him and showing to his mother in hands as he dies sitting across from her. I won’t spoil all of the bloody scenes, but that scene alone proves that The Preacher is truly not for the squeamish. AMC may not be a like HBO, Showtime but The Preacher succeeds expectations in my opinion to a type of audience that was originally once worried of a watered down version of The Preacher Graphic Novel.

Satire and Religious “Taboo” boundaries

If you are a very conservative, religious or overall a very sensitive  TV viewer I would kindly advise you to please switch to a different station  and not watch this show at all cost! The Preacher as show that dabbles into religion isn’t worried of tackling controversial subject manners of Christianity, Satanism, and even Scientology which also involves a little scene about Head Scientologist actor Tom Cruise. As the plot progresses The Preacher often digs in deep of the unholy religious role models, the pastors that supposedly to “possessed by the Lord” which they often blow up in bursts of splatter of blood and challenging the thought of God’s Law of how we suppose to settle our own sins and demons. If you are the type of  person that can’t handle these surreal subject manners involving Christianity and religion overall I heavily advice you to not watch it, but if you think you have thicker skin than you will be applaud the show’s risk of going further into uncharted territory.

Arseface

Now this didn’t totally ruin the show for me, but I was a little disappointed in Arseface played by Ian Colletti character design. I was personally expecting a more truly disfigured and disgusting look of Arseface similar to what is shown of him in graphic novel and including the post-set photos of him.’ Instead I see a half-assed (no pun intended) Arseface face. To me Arseface looks like a guy that managed to wear a half face mask on below his face just to show a deep hole his mouth . It looks like a cheap cosplay design of Arseface instead of true semi-real design of him. I mean Hell, not even his right eye is totally deformed similar to his comic book counterpart. I know this might sound a little nitpicky but I was really underwhelmed by the overall Arseface design. But because this is only a pilot they might alter his face to be more disfigured with the use of better expensive make-up or technology, if the TV show’s budget goes higher depending on the show ratings.

I personally I thought The Preacher was thrilled wide TV experience among all of the superhero films that are making millions on the big screen, The Preacher as own its is like a breath of fresh air in the comic book  media genre. And although I was really let down by the Arseface face design, which is also a character that has very significant major role in The Preacher Graphic Novels and I personally thought the show’s pacing was a little slow here and there, I really recommend you watching it especially if you are big fan of the comic book series.

1. Monstress

Why you Should be interested in this?

I have not read Montress yet, but I have read a lot a good stuff from it and I want you to be aware of it. From what I can gather from reading many articles, Montress is story that offers a strong female lead character that is based in a fantastical world. A fantastical world that centers around a stream punk influence universe  that shares a big presence of monsters and their opposite relationship with humans. So, if you are into fantasy, monsters and stuff like Game of Thrones and Lord of Rings than I you should have Monstress on your radar.

What’s it about? 

The story is heavily influenced on steam punk fiction and tells a story about a young woman name Maika that is trying to control her physic powers that is somehow connected to a monster that has a greater power. This monster often persuade Maika to go through a possible never ending war against the humans and the various other fantastical monsters.

2. Nameless

Why you should be interested in this?

Just look at the damn illustration it looks like a homage to Frank Miller’s Hardboiled. Nameless is another Grant Morrison  masterpiece in the making. From what I read so far Nameless looks like a mash-up between Ridely Scott’s Prometheus (A movie which I enjoyed) and Deadspace (A sci fi horror videogame that I can never get tired of playing). Nameless is Grant Morrison Sci fi horror comic that mainly has my personal interest, because in my opinion there hasn’t been a lot scfi added in the overall horror genre recently.  So whenever when the first volume of Grant Morrison is Nameless is out I’ll be the first one to pick it from the bookstore/comic book store! Well hopefully that is.

What is it about?

The story  begins when a astronaut that murders his own family and then himself leaves a cryptic message. An occult hustler refereed as the Nameless is summon by a Union by billionaire futurist to do a special but disastrously mission to prevent asteroid called Xibalba . And subplots of crazed inhuman experiments and many “out there:” Grant Morrison type of narrative.

Dark Knight Returns III

Why you should be interested in this?

After the disappointment of Dark Knight Strikes Again a sequel to the most critical acclaim Batman story Dark Knight Returns, Dark Knight Returns III: Master Race returns offering more promising results for many Batman fans alike.  Dark Knight Returns III was best selling issue DC Comic in November. Dark Returns III sold a totally of 440, 234 copies.  The earlier issues of Dark Knight Returns have received postie acclaim from critics and word of mouth among fans.

What is it about? 

The story focus in alternative timeline of the DC universe where Lex Luthor is dead and billionaire Bruce Wayne is nowhere to be seen in Gotham City. Until Bruce Wayne wearing his famous Bat suit unites with sidekick Carrie Kelly. Batman also reunites with knowable DC trinity characters like Wonder Woman and Superman. However, without spoiling  the entire plot for you Dark Knight Master Race mainly just takes place where Strikes Again left off.

The Future?

Due to DK III success Frank Miller has announced that he will  plan another fourth mini-series to fully concluded DK III. Oh boy I can’t wait!

The Superhero Registration Acts You should be Aware of if you are a unregistered costume superhero

The Keene Act

First introduced in Alan Moore’s and David Gibbon’s Watchmen graphic novel the Keene Act registration act, that was passed by John Dean Keene in 1977 that forbid all costumed vigilantes fighting against criminals undocumented. Unless they were working solely for the US government like The Comedian or Dr. Manhattan for example.  Characters like Silk Spectre had to reveal their identities to the public due to the Keene Act enforcement. Many costumed  vigilantes choose to retire there costume vigilante adventures. However, Rorschach who is negatively viewed as a outlaw to the police enforcement and even to his superhero colleagues, choose to disobey the Keene Act’s law requirements. To show that he will “never” back down to the governments demands, he kills a convicted serial rapist  and leaves his lifeless body outside the New York City Police Station.

What really fascinates me about the X-Men is the elements of bigotry and discrimination that ties in the relationship of Mutants and normal human beings. The MRA registration act was  first introduced in Uncanny X-Men #141,  Senator Robert Kelly to pass a registration act on mutants to be forcefully surveillance by the  government. Not to be confused with the Mutant Control Act in X-Men Days of Future Past that was a law passed in the future for Sentinels to police on the mutant race. When it comes to the Mutant Registration Act the Supreme Court dose to have no control to veto the legislation. Mutant Registration Act mainly targets unregistered  mutants that are not affiliated with the X-Men or other specific teams. Featured in many X-Men related or Marvel related titles many mutants often protest against the Registration Act of its immoral basis of mutants.

 The Powers Register Act

Powers written by Micheal Bendis and illustrated by Micheal Avon Oeming is a story about superheroes that are based in a realistic world where they are forced to register to the government to be able to continue their cape crusading. In Powers volume 1 a former favorable superhero Super Shock goes out in public killing hundreds of people around the world. Because of this the government passed a harsher law that forbid superheroes to be in public and also to use their superpowers. If a super powered being dose not comply homicidal detectives Christian Walker, who was a former superhero that lost his powers and his female partner Deena Pilgrim will will do anything to bring the Powers down.

National Super Agency and the Superhero Relocation Program.

Pixar makes many great films for both children and adults but the Incrediables as a animated movie or just as a movie in general really offers substance for the animated and superhero genre. If you watched the Incrediables the National Super Agency (which is just a parody of the real-life National Security Agency) is a superhero registration act that ordered superheroes to fight crime in a legal process. However, due to a risky violent interaction against a super villain in the beginning of the film a citizen was severely injured which caused a court case called the Sansweet v. Incredible.  The court case settlement caused many superheroes to be possible legally responsible for the dangerous activities they face on a daily bases. During the aftermath of the court case many superheroes decide to retire because of there unsafely percussion’s they often face. Government took notice of this and able to establish a Superhero Relocation Program (which is also a fictionalized Witness Protection) for former superheroes to retire and live “normal” without the public or their former enemies knowing their former super hero alter egos.

The Superhuman Registration Act

If you are excited for Captain America: Civil War coming out in May 6th I like to introduce the original SRA legislation that was featured in Marvel Civil War. The legislation on superheroes and vigilantes began  after a catastrophic battle between a group of young heroes and a costumed super villains in the middle of a suburban neighborhood killing hundreds of innocent lives and including destroying many people’s livelihoods. Because of this Iron Man decide to become a strong supporter for the SRA legislation where Captain America becomes the polar opposite of him. As Iron Man believes that all superheroes should register and reveal  their secret identities to the government (mainly to Shield). Captain America on the other hand opposes Iron Man’s ideology and stands for what he believes in that people should be allowed freely to fight crime regardless if they hide there identities under a mask or have superhuman abilities. Such disagreements leads to a Civil War that is a war against two opposing sides that believes stricter authoritarian laws for the government and for the right to fight for what you wholeheartedly believe in. I also recommend you reading Marvel Civil War before you get the chance to watch the Civil War next year.

If you love American history and “vampires” that American Vampire is a graphic novel that is big enough for your bite.  American Vampire that tells a tale of two vampires Pearl Jones, a old time 1920s rising actress and rebellious vampire Skinner Sweet.. What makes Scott Synder’s American Vampire so satisfying is because the story not just highlight the important historical moments in American history it also goes deeper into exploring the ancient vampire lore. If you love vampire stories that goes deep into the mythology and the evolution of vampires than American Vampire should defiantly be your first  choice of blood.

Here is another Scott Snyder horror tale if you are carious what he dose beyond just doing Batman stories. Wytches follows a story of a young shy and troubled red headed teen name Sailor and the Rook Family who lives in a small town among the dark haunting woods. Sailor encounters supernatural nightmares and visions as Salior’s father Charlie tries to consult her the best way that he can. As Salior and Charlie  try to overcome  their haunting dilemmas. They become aware that the town and the forest that they live holds historical supernatural secrets. Similar to American Vampire Wytches digs deeper into the possibility of the Wicca mythology and offering a type of tale if the existence of “supernatural” witches lived in our reality. But I won’t spoil what’s inside the black Cauldron for you.

Media: The film rights for a Wytches adaptation is required for Plan B Entertainment both Scott Snyder and Jock will be executive producers alongside Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Keliner as producers. But their hasn’t been any recent news on the project since its been first announced on October 2014.

Reception: The first 3 issues Wytches is highly received by Comics Alliances, Comic Book Resources and IGN.

4. Hack/Slash

If you heard about the announcement of a Hack/Slash TV series and if intrigued with the synopsis than highly recommend the Hack/Slash to be featured on your list of graphic novels that you should read on Halloween night. Hack/Slash was a one-shot horror comic series that was written and illustrated by Tim Seeley which ran from 2004-2015. Hack/Slash was a popular horror cult title published by both Image comics and once  by Devil’s Due Publication. Hack/Slash tells the story of hack slashing punk goth girl name Cassie Hack who was once a slasher victim similar to slasher victims in films such as Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street etc. Cassie Hack one day decide to fight back against the slashers by slashing them. Throughout progress of the stories Cassie Hack becomes a horror slasher bounty hunter  against any slasher that prey upon innocent teenagers.

3. Walking Dead Series

You think the AMC show is gruesome, the comics books is just as deadly (no pun intended).Walking Dead  is Robert Kirkman’s throwback to the old school zombies tales since the Dawn of Dead. Walking Dead is set in a God Forsaken world, where if you get bit by a Walker you either become one or be eaten by one there isn’t a third option. In the world of Walking Dead you can’t even trust anybody. Sometimes its humans vs zombies and then its often humans vs psychopaths. There is no freedom from such a world the only freedom is by truly dying, and that doesn’t include turning into animated corpse. I know the  AMC TV show based on the Walking Dead comic is not fully unknown to the mainstream public, but I encourage to at least for you to check out the graphic novel series nearby your local comic book store or book store period. I promise you Walking Dead viewer that you will love the books as much as you love the TV show.

2.Batman the Long Halloween

Every Halloween I read one of my favorite Jeph Loeb (writer) and Tim Sale (illustrator) Batman stories ever created titled The Batman the Long Halloween. Although Batman the Long Halloween features many holidays ( Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day Easter etc) the narrative story begins on Halloween day after a mysterious serial killer nicknamed “Holiday” kills one of Falcone and Sal Moroni Crime Family members. As the story progress  The Holiday killer murders begin to appear in each holiday and its up to Batman (Bruce Wayne) Commissioner Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent (pre-Two-Face) have to investigate the bizarre occurring serial murders. What is also special about The Long Halloween to me personal I like how the story transitions of focusing on the evolution of the “freaks” of Gotham which includes fantastical characters such as Joker, Catwoman, Solomon Grundy, Scarecrow , Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter and so forth. And how the normal Mafia  family like the Falcones and the Sal Moroni’s have to face such unwanted competition. Batman The Long Halloween also follow ups with Batman The Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome. Long Halloween is also the continuation of Frank Miller’s  Batman Year One.

Reception: The Long Halloween has been raised for its art, film noir inspired narrative and its overall premise of the story. IGN also ranked The Long Halloween #4 out 25 best Batman Graphic Novels of all time!

1. The Hellblazer series

Hellbalzer is one of the defying horror DC/Vertigo comics that was published in the late 1980s all the way to 2013. The first Hellbalzer publication was written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Stephen R. Bissette and ever since its very first publication Hellblazer has been written by various writers over its long run. Many writers varies to Neil Gaiman, Grath Ennis, Mike Carrey, Grant Morrison among many others. To its core the Hellblazer series is a occult detective fiction that features narcissistic protagonist John Constantine facing against supernatural demons, but the story often focus on Constantine facing his own inner demons. Which at times are even more intriguing in a more human level. The Hellblazer series not just tackle horror elements but also political views which was depicted in issue 15 titled “The Fear Machine.” So if your more into mainstream comics than Hellblazer is probably not for you, but if your the type of demographic that enjoys psychological and horror that offers a lot of substance than I highly recommend the Hellblazer series.

Media: Live action adaptations of the Hellblazer comic series have been featured in the mixed reviewed Keenu Reeves 2005 Constantine film and the short lived NBC Constantine TV series. However, John Constantine played by Matt Ryan  is promise to be featured on season 4 on Arrow. There is still no new news of a possible new season of Constantine show that will appear on the CW Network or other cable shows .

Reception: Hellblazer series is highly praised series of graphic novels form both critics and readers alike.

For over 10 years James Cameron has been clamoring to direct a Battle Angel American movie adaptation for  over a  decade. But now it seems Cameron has found his replacement to do the job for him. From various news sites James Cameron choose edgy director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids, Machete 1 and 2, Shorts and Sin City 2: Dame To Kill For) to direct the Battle Angel Alita live action adaptation. James Cameron addressed Robert Rodriguez’s involvement from may news websites,

“Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel,” James Cameron said in a press release. “He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”

“Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films,” Rodriguez added “Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in film making. Judging  by James Cameron’s comments regarding to Robert Rodriguez he is very excited to collaborate with Rodriguez to finally get Battle Angel off the ground.  However, let’s see if James Cameron as producer can help guide Robert Rodriguez to make a quality Battle Angel film that will both please the fans of the source material and also to a mainstream audience.

My overall thoughts on this news

If you see this pic of my choosing then you already know my overall reaction after reading this latest news. My thoughts on Robert Rodriguez’s ability as a director rages to him being really “Good” to being really “Meh” to being really “Bad.” There is no doubt that Robert Rodriguez has a visually impressive style when comes to making films like Sin City, a movie that I really loved. As for the sequel I often view it as something that shouldn’t have been bothered being made. Personally I be really up for James Cameron directing this property instead of Robert Rodriguez, because of his better track  record (even though many people feel that Avatar is overrated). But aside of that their is no questioning when comes to character development, story and visual effects James Cameron is your go-to  director when comes to making big budgeted films. Unfortunately it looks will never experience to see Cameron full on take on Battle Angel because of his  direct focus of making the Avatar sequels. Hopefully Cameron’s involvement will help guide Robert Rodriguez to make a quality film instead of Battle Angel being the next slate of really bad sci-fi female lead films alongside Aeon Flux, Resident Evil  movies ( Okay I thought the first one was good) and the Underworld series. Now if this  movie is good, than Battle Angel could be the next Edge of Tomorrow (A American film that is based on a Japanese Light Novel and Manga called All You Need Is Kill), that shocked many critics and audience by surprise. After that disappointing last Sin City Film hopefully Battle Angel will be Rodriguez’s comeback like Ridely Scott’s the Martian if not looks like Rodriguez will offer another bomb to the box office.

What is Battle Angel Alita?

Battle Angel Alita (in Japanese its often referred as Gunnm) is a Manga series  that was written and illustrated by Yukito Kishiro  which began in December 3 1990 and ended on my birthday year of April 1,1995. Like another popular Manga its later adapted as a Anime series distributed for both a Japanese and to a western audience. Also Battle Angel was adapted as a videogame adaptation for PlayStation. Battle Angel tells a story based in a post-Apocalyptic world that focus on a female cyborg name Alita. Alita struggles of trying to regain her memories that she lost in the garbage. Alita is then discovered by a cybernetics doctor which he later helps repairs and takes care of her throughout the events of the story. As she tries to regain her memories she develops into a cybernetic bounty hunter who often encounters variety of characters  that she once met during the the time of her estrange past.

The Boys TV Series News Overview

In the past there have been many reports that director Adam McKay  was on working to develop “The Boys” movie adaptation for many times, but it looks like The Boys is going to be transferred to the smaller screen instead. According to a ScreenCrush article Seth Rogan who is also producing one of Garth Ennis’s and Darick Robertson’s gritty and raw stories the Preacher for AMC is going to try to adapt The Boys for a TV series. However, due to the source material’s extreme grotesque violence and sexually explicit material its most likely The Boys will be offered for HBO, Showtime or Netflix. The Boys will probably be also too extreme for some of cable shows like a FX or for a AMC perhaps. However, AMC did manage to offer a lot of excessive violence when comes to Walking Dead and it seems the Preacher will be no different. Although the excessive themes like grotesque use of language and nudity are toned down compared to what is normally shown in the source material. To me I would much prefer The Boys to be adapted as live action TV series instead of a movie, because in my personal opinion The Boys works better as a episodic story compare to being warped up as a 2hr movie. Rather this will turn out to be either adapted to a TV series  or a movie, I would be so disappointed that Simon Pegg isn’t cast as Hughie Campbell, not only because he looks exactly like  the character just because the character is exactly molded after him.

The Boys is one of the grittiest and satirized stories written by Garth Ennis and gruesomely illustrated by Darick Robertson. In the world of The Boys, custom super powered superheroes coexist with average people, and are looked normally upon as everyday celebrities. Like many celebrities they often abuse the powers due to their BIG egos. When superheroes turned bad the American government call on a CIA black ops division formally as the “The Boys” and well one girl. The Boys consist of Hughie Campbell, Billy Butcher, Mother’s Milk, Frenchmen and the “Female” devote  their violent lives to clean up the super powered messes in our beloved USA. In the core of the story Garth Ennis shows us a twisted fictionalized reality of what if the Avengers were in our world. What if our beloved Captain America became a O. J Simpson or what if one day Wonder Woman became a raunchier version of Kim Kardashian?

From a latest Hollywood Reporter article the cult Horror comic Hack/Slash is going to be adapted as TV series by Relativity Media that also shares partnerships with  Anchorage Capital, Falcon Investments and Luxor Capital. Hack/Slash will be written by action-orientated movie screenwriter Skip Woods (eh) who directed many mixed to really bad slate films such as Sword Fish, Hitman and Hitman: Agent 47 and A Good Day To Die Hard. Hack/Slash TV show will be looked upon as the revival of the survival horror drama AMC’s The  Walking Dead.

My thoughts on Hack/Slash News

Just like when I found out about the news about  Battle Angel being directed by Robert Rodriguez instead of James Cameron, here’s another picture to express my frustration. Hack/Slash isn’t my favorite comic series in the world, but I enjoy the couple of volumes when I get the chance to read them through. When I found out Hack/Slash was being adapted as series than a movie I was semi-intrigued. Unfortunately when I read through the rest of the article to find out that Skip Woods was going to write the script, than my enthusiasm for this show went straight out the widow. After watching films like Hitman Agent 47 and A Good Day to Die Hard, X-Men Origins Wolverine among many action films which he wrote. I thought all of them have been either mediocre to straight up bad. If you read some of the Hack/Slash comics the stories are often looked upon as edgy horror fun but what I’m really afraid when it comes to Skip Woods writing the script, I know he is going to make Hack/Slash series into a dumb, generic action film. And after you are done watching it you really want to turn off your brain. Not just because you want to turn off your off your brain on purpose because, you aware what you watching is just meant to be seen as dumb fun. I’m referring to something so bad, you really want try hard to turn off your, and never want to remember it again. And a Good Day to Die hard and Deadpool featured in X-Men Origins Wolverine are good examples of movies that should never be remembered ever again. Look I know I’m probably pre-judging this news too much and if this future TV series ever gets made than I’m willing to give Skip Woods a small chance. But if this show gets cancelled after one season then I know who to partially to blame when comes to the writing of the series.

What is Hack/Slash?

Hack/Slash was a one-shot horror comic series that was written and illustrated by Tim Seeley which ran from 2004-2015. Hack/Slash was a popular horror cult title published by both Image comics and once  by Devil’s Due Publication. Hack/Slash tells the story of hack slashing punk goth girl name Cassie Hack who was once a slasher victim similar to slasher victims in films such as Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street etc. Cassie Hack one day decide to fight back against the slashers by slashing them. Throughout progress of the stories Cassie Hack becomes a horror slasher bounty hunter  against any slasher that prey upon innocent teenagers.

I know I haven’t wrote article see the early October because I have been really busy lately but I willing to make post every weekend if I have to do so that is.
