Boardwalk Empire Star Jack Huston has left the Crow Reboot and it seem the Crow is forever dead in Development Hell

News Overview

From a recent Variety news article written by Brent Lang it has been announced that Jack Huston has left the Crow Reboot. Relatively Studio that is funding the movie is now looking for replacement for Jack Huston‘s lead role such as stars as Nicholas Hoult and Jack O’ Connell and including discussions that Forest Whitaker could be a  supporting character. Director Corin Hardy responded to Jack Huston’s decision “Jack Huston is unfortunately unavailable to continue with us on ‘The Crow.” he also said “‘The Crow’ is an amazing project, and I am grateful that we have the time and patience to get it right. We look forward to unveiling our new lead and starting to film over the next several weeks.” Relatively Studios also made a response to Jack Huston’s absence as well, “Jack is a remarkably gifted actor, and we look forward to working with him in the future.” The studio also included. “Corin Hardy has a tremendous vision for ‘The Crow,’ and we are working closely with him to continue prepping the movie and supporting him as he brings his vision to the big screen.Jack Huston isn’t the only one who decide to drop out the project, Lord of Rings star Luke Evans decide to walk out as the lead role months ago. This recent news worry me because it seems that the post-production is really have some sort of script issues and overall execution issues. I would love to see a new re-imagining of the Crow set in modern time, if is good it could be introduced to a new audience who haven’t seen the original Crow movie that stared Brandon Lee. I know many anti-remake purist would hate for saying this but I would love to see another Crow movie either if it is a remake or sequel. I think being introduced to another Crow move during our time in the superhero craze could offer a balance in the comic book genre. I’ve notice people often complain on “dark and gritty comic book movies” but other than Watchmen and the Dark Knight Rises we haven’t truly had a dark and dramatic comic book movie for a very long time. So I’m hoping Corin Hardy re-envisioning will succeed if is ever finished, but after reading the news of Luke Evans that he had left and now Jack Huston left the project as well, it gives me a bad sign that Crow will always be dead in development Hell for the next 5 years or more.

The Crow 1994 Movie adaptation and the Graphic Novel

The Gothic Crow graphic novel was written by James O’Barr who witness the death of his girlfriend caused by a drunk driver. The Crow is a tragic tale of a young man name Eric Draven who lost his fiancee by a ruthless violent street gang. Eric’s fiancee Shelly was beaten raped by the gang members and Eric watched as he lays on the road injured with a bullet in his forehead. Both of them lay on the road, but Eric is later resurrected as the Crow to exact revenge onto the gang members that raped and gruesomely killed his girlfriend. The Crow is truly  a successful underground graphic novel series that was published by Caliber Comics in the late 1980s. When you read the Crow you can tell how personal the story of the Crow really meant to James O’Barr. The story of The Crow reflects on sadness and inner torment of him learning to face reality of his girlfriend’s death. The Crow was later adapted as a movie in 1994 starring Brandon Lee who is the son of my all time favorite old school Asian martial art actor Bruce Lee. The movie follow the same plot line of the movie and became a critical success but carried a sad reaction when Brandon Lee died on set by a freak accident. The people behind the scenes used amazing visual effects to able finish Brandon Lee’s unfinished roles due to his death. If you think it was hard for Fast and Furious 7 to work around the death of Paul Walker can you imagine how hard to do the same with Brandon Lee by using downgraded technology in 1994? I bet it was miracle to accomplish such a task and trying to make it believable that Brandon Lee actually feel  like he was acting in the movie throughout each scene. The movie was admired for its creative visual effects, Gothic inspired art style and its deep narrative. The movie currently holds a 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, however The Crow sequels received a negative impact including  Crow City of Angels  sequel that was released on 1996. The move received overly negative critic reviews from critics and currently holds a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and made less money compare to its original processor. The original Crow made 50 million worldwide where the Crow sequel made only 17 million after its theatrical release. A Crow series called The Crow: Stairway to Heaven was aired on September 25th 1998 but was later cancelled in 1999 after one season. A third Crow sequel was made in 2000 was directed by Bharat Nalluri and was a straight to DVD release which cause a controversy because their was a fan boycott directed to Miramax to demand a Crow theatrical release. But like what happen to majority of fan boycotts it was unsuccessful and the movie was release to straight to DVD. There were plans of a Rob Zombie directing  Crow reboot in the late 1990s titled “The Crow: 2037.” I’m glade that it wasn’t never made, The Crow in the future eesh! It gives me nightmares even thinking about it. Of all the numerous bad and forgettable sequels and a short live TV series it will never match the same success as the original version. Maybe the Crow remake directed Corin Hardy will give Crow movie franchise some life for a new generation which might influence others to check out the original movie.

Conclusion

So what do you think Jack Huston stepping out of project is worrisome? Or you think they can easily bring another new actor recover from the falling out? I would like to know what your’re thoughts on the comment section.
