From a 2 day article Netflix teased a character for Marvel’s Daredevil season 2  “The Gladiator”. The MP engraved on the razor blade is confirmed that Matt Gerlad will be be the super-villain Malevin Potter also known as the Gladiator. On Marvel Daredevil’s Twitter Page its stated “I gotta be good. So I make things. I’m good at making things.” Along with announcements of Puniser, Elektra (possibly along with the Hand), and possibly Bulls-Eye it seems Marvel’s Daredevil season 2 will introduce a lot of custom street vigilantes or super villains  and that is including the possibility of having a Gladiator in the rouges gallery.

Who is the Gladiator?

The Gladiator first appeared in Daredevil #66 (1966) being one of Daredevil’s first villains he have ever faced. During his day job he works as a custom designer at a Custom Shop in New York City, his suit consist of deadly wrist blades and battle armor. He fought Daredevil in many several alter occasions, and even teamed up with other costumed super villain the Masked Marauder. Gladiator joined many super villain groups called the Maggie, Electro’s Emissaries of Evil, and allied with other B-List villains like Death Stalker and the Beetle. In more modern comics he later reformed to fight alongside Daredevil (well if you can’t beat him join him) and, fight alongside him to go against the Hand. However, there is moments that even when he is reformed he is either brainwashed by the Purple Man, manipulated by the Kingpin or intoxicated by Mr. Fear who makes him out to be a misunderstood villain to Daredevil and to the public.

Marvel’s Hip-Hop Variant Criticism

All-New and Different Marvel variants sparked some criticism stated in a recent article from  Comic Book Resources, because of Marvel’s lack of diverse black writers and artist, many believe that covers could have been drawn by African American artist. Marvel’s Chief and Editor Alex Alsono published the Marvel Hip-Hop variant covers which are a homage to real Hip-Hop album covers. Alex Alsono even stated that he is a hip-hop fan which also, encouraged him to alter real-life hip-hop variants in “Marvel style.” Though variants have received creative positive criticism it also spark some debates over the lack of black artist and writers working for Marvel. Because hip-hop culture is regarded as a dominate art form, black artist and writers feel that they should be able to be at least contributed to do some of the work for these particular cover variants. Regardless of the internet chatter there have been some hip-hop artist including Run DMC who praised the variant covers on his  Twitter account that you can view from below.

But when comes to the internet viewers many believe that having diversity in the comic industry could at least contributed in making these covers. When comes to me, I agree that Marvel should at least hire African American artist (that have knowledge of hip-hop culture or at least listen to the music) to at least contributed of making these variants. But I see no problem for Hispanic/Caucasian artist like Alex Alonso to publish these hip-covers even though he is not Black. But heck, Black or not at least Marvel is willing to show African American hip-hop culture in the positive heroic light, instead of always being viewed as negative when comes to media standards. And also I’m excited that Marvel is indeed developing a Black Panther solo book.

Conclusion

Are you excited that the hire brute the Gladiator is appearing in the next season of Marvel’s Daredevil and also do believe that Marvel should at least hired black artist and writers in Marvel/Studios. If so please discuss on the comment section below. I truly would love you’re input.
